BAGIS response to the suspension of prescribing for under 18s in the UK

It is with dismay that we received the news regarding the suspension of hormone prescribing for under-18s with gender incongruence in England.

NHS England is seeking feedback on a draft clinical policy which prohibits their use.

The policy is accompanied by several commissioned evidence reviews.

Full details can be found here

As professionals supporting trans and non binary people we know the benefits from these treatments based on many collective patient-years of clinical experience and on the available international research. We are not aware of any new research that would cast doubt on this approach and we note that this was affirmed by the Taylor Review and the recommendations in the Cass Review that derive from it.

BAGIS council are working with third sector organisations and the clinical academic community to appraise the evidence review, formulate a coordinated response and determine other key actions.

Those with skills in systematic reviews or who have been involved in relevant research with trans and gender diverse young people, and who would like to support this work, are encouraged to contact president@bagis.co.uk.

Meanwhile, we would encourage individuals to respond to the consultation using the link above.

We would also remind you to respond to the JLA PSP for Trans, Non-Binary and Gender Diverse Adults Healthcare.

This is a crucial time to ensure our voices are heard.

In solidarity,

BAGIS Council
