Surgical Session: Preparing for Surgery

  • 10/10/2025
  • 9:00 am
  • International Suite

Tina Rashid and Ryan Holmes: This joint presentation, delivered in collaboration with our team psychologist, will explore the requirements and practicalities of preparing patients for gender-affirming surgery. We will outline the key clinical criteria for readiness and share insights into common challenges we encounter within our service which can delay or complicate surgical planning.

The session will emphasise the importance of integrated multidisciplinary working, with particular focus on the novel role of the psychologist embedded within the surgical team. We will discuss how this approach supports both patient wellbeing and surgical safety, and how lessons learned from our service model can be applied to wider practice.

Rachel Oliver: Despite the comprehensive pathway of assessment patients undergo prior to Gender Affirmation Surgery (GAS), the potential for regret after GAS remains a concern. Here we present our  UK institution’s experience with regret after GAS and review the literature with regards to prevalence, aetiology and management.

Chloe Wright will present on the ABS guidelines
