Workshop 1: Hormonal management around gender affirming surgery- The great debate
This interactive workshop will address a frequently debated area of peri-operative care: the management of gender-affirming hormone therapy around surgery. Balancing the need to maintain hormonal support with the imperative of minimising complications requires nuanced decision-making. We will examine the evidence and controversies surrounding continuation versus temporary cessation of hormones, particularly oestrogen therapy, in the context of venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk. We will also consider the management of testosterone therapy and the associated risks of polycythaemia, as well as broader implications for patient recovery and long-term outcomes.
