Paul Carruthers

Paul is Children’s Endocrine Nurse Specialist & Gender Identity Nurse Specialist at Leeds Children’s Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary. Paul qualified as a sick children’s nurse from Leeds University in 2004 and began his career in paediatric cardiology. Paul then worked in the community setting in various roles such as a children’s community nurse, inclusion nurse and school nurse. A strong interest in public health steered him to complete a degree in the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse course which led him to specialise in safeguarding and teenage sexual health. An interest in higher education resulted in Paul qualifying as a practice teacher supporting post graduate school nursing students. He currently works as a children’s endocrine and gender identity clinical nurse specialist. Paul is the team leader for the children’s endocrine team and is the national lead gender identity specialist nurse for the GIDS service. Paul has qualified as a non-medical and independent prescriber. The gender identity aspect of his role requires him to play a pivotal part in the ever growing and changing field of paediatric gender identification. Away from work Paul is a busy dad to his two sons and enjoys to travel.
